Mahon Sugar Shack

Though the maple syrup season has passed I'm sharing this photograph of the sleigh from the Mahon sugar shack. Many years ago mum and I toured the homestead area and found her families sugar shack. It was falling down with broken beams, rusted pails tossed on the ground. It was a sad site.

Rummaging through the bush we found one bright light, the sugar sleigh. There were recollections of toiling all hours gathering the sap to bring it to the shack, the hours and hours of boiling, and finally pouring the golden nectar into bottles. Those bottles were then tossed into the farm swamp, tied onto poles with red rags so they knew where to find them when needing a taste of mother natures sweetness.

Fast forward a few decades and I could find no sign of the sugar shack during a tour Autumn past. I believe it was at a junction, perhaps where the Old Kingston Road veers from Mahon Road? If anyone knows if it still exists feel free to comment.
